Meet Me & My Gear
I’ve spent years balancing endurance sport, the corporate world, owning a business, and life outside of training, all while chasing goals ranging from sub-3 marathons to Ironman finish lines and World Championship racing.
Along the way, I became fascinated by the part of endurance sport most people overlook: execution.
Not just training harder, but learning how to fuel properly, pace intelligently, recover well, adapt when things go sideways, and build systems that actually fit into real life.
This space is where I share the tools, frameworks, lessons, and conversations that have helped me, in hopes they help others feel a little more prepared, confident, and composed on race day too.
My first triathlon was as raw as it gets: on a borrowed bike, a surf wetsuit, and flat gym shoes. No fancy set up and no real plan for fuelling. But you know what? I finished. And it taught me something I still believe today: you don’t need everything to start, but the right tools, used intentionally, can make the journey more effective and a heck of a lot more fun.
Explore what I use and trust below.
-
I use the first generation of FORM goggles, and have swam with them for over 4 years.
Training Wetsuit:
This is my wetsuit from when I used to surf / wakeboard in the shoulder season. It’s not for triathlon, but it keeps me warm and I don’t worry about ripping it!
O’Neill Ultraflex Firewall
Swimming is my weakest discipline, and this suit keeps me flat & fast in the water - it’s not warm though, and you have to be careful not to rip it.
Tri Suit (Z3rod):
Team Canada uses the these and so I wear it. It’s good, breathable but wish it had more storage.
Tri Suit (alternative):
2XU Core Tri Suit : I have the sleeveless, but I wouldn’t get sleeveless again. I find that you chafe between arm and body
Castelli Free Sanremo 3 Suit Short Sleeve (this was given to me by JP at Browns. I quite like it, but wish it had a touch more leg compression - the 2XU was better for this
Swim Cap:
This cap goes on first, then goggles, then race day swim cap. It’s Nike branded, and was given to me by my in-laws that swim better than I do.
This really helped me increase my distance per stroke
Fins:
These really helped me engage my glutes when swimming
Garmin Fenix 7; I believe they are on v8 now
-
Tri Bike:
Cervelo P Series 105. Honestly, a great bike.
It’s a solid bike, and handles well. I did my first couple of 70.3s on it with road tires.
Indoor Trainer:
Tacx Neo 2T. I bought this used off of marketplace for about half of what it retails for. It’s great.
Trainer Software:
Rouvy. I use this platform because then I can see the Ironman routes live before actually getting to the venue.
Trainer Mat:
Wife’s old yoga mat
Trainer Fan:
Old one we have to buy when the air conditioning stopped working one year
Towel Setup:
Beach towel wrapped around aerobars to limit salt drippings onto frame/mechanics
They are light, fast, and not too deep that you get blown off your bike
Still the best balance all-around
Pedals:
Garmin Rally RS200. I’m in the Garmin ecosystem, and they work flawlessly - with so many metrics you can analyze
Tri Shoes (Fizik Transiro Hydra):
I like them, and they are durable. Toe box is starting to get crushed from transitions, and white is dirty from sockless feet
Gravel Shoes (Shimamo RX8):
Great carbon bottom shoe to walk around in, and performance is solid - no complaints
Helmet:
Sweet Protection Falconer Aero. Its nice that it also has removable pieces to switch between racing and casual rides without having to have a second helmet
Sunglasses:
Saolar. Photochromatic so that you don’t have to worry between bike/run transition or tunnels
Aero bars Bottle:
Xlab Torpedo Versa 500 Carbon is great with the straw, and easy to refill mid-race - it also reminds you to drink because its in your face all the time. I’d recommend getting extra straw tips as you’ll bite through them, and want to keep them clean
Rear Hydration:
Trek bottles have the best lids - others don’t stay up
Bento Box: Stock
Flat Kit:
CO2, Pump, Tire Levers, Tube, $20
Bike Computer (Garmin Edge 1000):
This was actually given to me by a friend when they upgraded theirs
Socks:
None
Saddle/Aero Bars:
Stock
Bike Fit Provider (JP at Browns)
-
Thera Gun Mini (I find it easier to handle than the larger version)
Chiropractor (Dave)
Personal Trainer (Dan)
-
Race Nutrition Sources:
Maurten Solids 160 (I try not to look at the price)
Gatorade (its not much cheaper to get the powder, and its a lot messier/less consistent)
SaltStick Electrolyte (I find capsules are easier to swallow in race than chewables, and are more dense to sodium)
Other Nutrition Sources:
-
Everyday Trainer:
Speed/Intervals Shoe:
Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 (they are on the 5 now, and don’t know how those react)
Race Day Shoe:
Saucony Endorphin Elite 2: Easy to slide your foot in during transition
Trail Shoe:
Saucony Peregrine 16 GTX. Keeps your feet dry and warm in the winter; and great traction for trails
Elastic Laces:
They ain’t pretty, but they work well - flat it better than rounded so they don’t dig in and bug you late in the race
Socks:
Go-to Shorts:
Lululemon (fast & free lined). Lined is better for holding your fuel and not chafing
Go-to Shirt:
Nike AeroSwift (got me to my first sub-3 marathon without chafe or heaviness)
Heart Rate Monitor
Hat:
I wear old race hats; they tend to be Bocogear.com
Race Number Belt:
VeloChampion with the storage so you can have nutrition pre-loaded in transition
I use the empty case of what Nuun tablets come in. I don’t like Nuun
Headphones (in training):
AirPods Pro with metronome app
